It was July 2006 that we shared our wedding vows at the top of Snowbird’s Tram with an 11,000 foot view. Vero wanted to share this spectacular view with Pin, our family friend from Mexico. However, the scenery from the top is a bit different in November than in July…can we say snow?
They took the tram to the top with skiers and snow boarders alike. It’s always a treat to ride the tram to the top and gaze at the beauty that Snowbird has to offer.
In the plaza at Snowbird, there is a rock mounted on a pedestal with a plaque explaining how the rock was once the peak of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Funny thing, I skied at Snowbird for years before I actually stopped and read the plaque.
After our visit, Pin was excited and wanted to learn how to snowboard. I miss those days of grabbing an edge through a well executed turn. I would always hear the voice of my dear friend and ski coach, Dave Price, as he would say, “keep your hip to the hill, shoulders square downhill, knee in, uphill ski floating, commit to the turn, shift weight, plant your pole, grab the inside edge, keep your hip to the hill…”
He was an extraordinary man, civil engineer during the week, incredible ski instructor on the weekend. He once taught the Snowbird Ski Team, not recreational type skiing, but adrenalin-filled ski racing techniques. I was privileged to have been taught these same techniques because they taught control, timing, commitment, anticipation and most of all, to have fun. I never attained the level of skills or courage to compete, but I certainly enjoyed skiing.
