*** Library Adventures ***

The Salt Lake City Library was named as "Library of the Year" in 2006, for good reason. It is a beautiful building that boasts natural light, inviting vistas, and sections that are appealing to everyone of any age.

The multimedia offered includes music cds, video tapes and dvds on just about every subject. On the top floor is an art gallery that often has the most interesting shows, also there are historical books are on display.

This month, it is one of Audubon's book of birds. The pages are simply amazing, measuring 2 feet by 3 feet in size with intricate paintings of birds...sorry, it is not available to check out.

A quick tour of the library starts from the outside. This is the plaza where many events are held from Spring to Fall.

The Salt Lake City Arts Festival and the Jazz Festival are the largest draws. On top of the wall that ends at the top of the building are stairs. On the top of the building is a garden area, complete with trees, grass, flowers and chairs to sit and take in the spectacular view.

When you first enter the library, you are greeted with a 4-story high atrium. The glass mixed with steel cables, hinged round steel beams, soft lighting mixed with natural light that enters from all directions, make this simply enjoyable. There are small stores located at the street level that sell coffee, snacks, books, and momentos. There is also a theatre that is used to show indie movies, host lecture series, public debates, cultural events and meetings.

On the north side of the atrium are desks that provide plenty of workspace. Outlets are provided to plug in your laptop, ethernet cables are available to plug in, or if you have wireless, you can access it. The biggest choice is deciding which view you want, close to the action on street level, or more of a bird's eye view on the 4th floor.

This is what it looks like from the second floor when we're all spread out and messing around.

Benjamin loves to play with his ball wherever we go. He especially enjoys watching others; if he hears another kid, he will yell at them to get their attention so they will play with him.

Benjamin's favorite part of visiting the library is riding the elevator. Since it is enclosed totally in glass, he loves to ride from the basement to the 4th floor.

He is looking to see if he can spot mom working on her laptop.

In the basement is the kids section. There are little rooms that offer privacy for the little ones to relax with a book. You will find many parents sitting in these little rooms reading books to their kids.

This is a view of the kids section from above. The canvas "curtains" are usually pulled across during the summer months because it can get a bit warm from the sun.

This is the Ice Room, it reminds you of Superman's fortress at the North Pole (do you think that Santa took it over after he left?)

Curious George is one of Benjamin's favorite characters.

If you look up from the kids section, this is what you see.

In the teens section, there are thick colored glass sheets that Benjamin loves to look through. Whenever he sees his own reflection, he will usually give himself a kiss.

There is so much more to share about the Salt Lake City Library that cannot possibly be covered in one blog. This is one of my favorite places to photograph, especially at night, because of the various angles, reflections, and textures.
